None of us have ever met a samurai. I mean in real life. I can say that with almost complete certainty. Yet, we’re all very familiar with the figure of the samurai: a symbol of duty, discipline, and loyalty. Which also happens to be what it takes to be a butler. Of course, a samurai adds a hefty dose of swordsmanship to the mix. That’s why Akira Kurosawa directed Seven Samurai, not Seven Butlers.
To be precise, the samurai in the movie are actually ronin, meaning samurai who no longer have ties to a family and are free to take jobs from anyone who can pay. Like freelance journalists, but much better at killing—and therefore much more in demand.
